TIRANA, Dec 5 /ATA/ – The St. Nicholas icon, part of the collection of the National Museum of Medieval Art in Korça, southeast Albania, is undergoing full restoration by experts at the Arts Restoration Lab, saving the rare painting from degradation.
This icon is thought to have been part of the iconostasis of the church of St. Nicholas in the village of Sinice. In the centre, St. Nicholas is seated on an elegantly painted despotic throne with elaborate decorations of floral motifs. The Saint also is showed on a robe decorated with floral motifs, white and blue roses, with a white omophorion, the liturgical vestment and the symbol of his spiritual ecclesiastical authority. The paint’s background shows a sky full of light, with the Holy Spirit radiating in the shape of a dove.
The icon bears no author signature, but comparing it with another icon from the same iconostasis, part of the National Museum of Medieval Art collection, specialists believe it has been painted by Johan K. Zograf from Litohori around the year 1870.
