Gender equality, pillar of sustainable economic development

TIRANA, Dec 1 /ATA/ The Ministry of Finance and Economy as well as the French Development Agency (AFD) signed the 50 million euro agreement which aims at budgetary and technical support to remove obstacles to economic empowerment of women.

Following a commitment to the energy sector, signed on 12 November, AFD offers to Albanian government new tools to implement ambitious reforms in step with regional dynamics and European Union norms.
Albania is engaged in issues related to gender inequality through important programs and reforms. With the support of AFD and the World Bank, the government has initiated, since 2019, substantial political and institutional dialogue to foster the inclusion of women and strengthen their contribution to the country’s economic potential.

Consultations between the partners defined three objectives as part of this reform, promoting wider equality of access to immovable property, through the recognition of women’s right to own land and housing, development of policies related to access to the labour market, application of the right to work and means for child care, in order to promote the participation of women in the labor market, as well as strengthening the institutional legal framework for streamlining gender equality at national and local level especially through budgetary and statistical leverage.

AFD funds this program of expertise, analysis and consulting through a grant of 1.5 million euros and the mobilization of Expertise France.

Numerous actions have already been carried out in the framework of access to ownership rights, the provision of free legal counselling, the law on employment promotion, etc. Large scale work has been conducted during 2020 to identify barriers related to access to employment for women in rural and / or remote areas.
