Micro-insurance system against losses from natural disasters

TIRANA, Nov 21 /ATA/ – By Maela Marini/ Albanian farmers will soon have their own product insurance system in case of natural disasters.

Prime Minister Edi Rama stated on Sunday that “we are working on a micro-insurance system against losses from natural disasters.”

“We are working with the university to take to a whole new level the process of insuring products and overseeing the quality of crops. It is of paramount importance that agriculture be included in the insurance scheme. Our objective is to offer cover for the farmers, for the producers against risks and make sure they are not susceptible to extreme weather patterns.”

On the other hand, he added that “we cannot tell the farmers and producers in agriculture to buy insurance coverage as in the case of cars, because this insurance system is very expensive for producers and farmers.”

“We need an insurance policy system tailored to the farming needs and are working to have a micro-insurance system to protect farmer and producer from unexpected disasters, so when things happen beyond their control, they are completely covered.”

Today, Rama continued, “the world controls the quality and guarantee of the product through satellite technology.”

This is another component that our satellites will cover. So, we will work on this insurance system through microfinance, which guarantees comprehensive information, be it for the government, or for the university, or for the insurers, or for the farmers and for each plot, so that we know in real time where the production is and above all identify in real time the quality of the seed,” Rama said.
