Agreement with UK on extraditions, Manja: No talks about asylum-processing centre

TIRANA Nov 18 /ATA/ – By I.Vata/ Minister of Justice Ulsi Manja stated on Thursday after the government meeting that a memorandum of understanding in the field of legal aid with the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland on the transfer of convicted persons respectively from Albania to Britain and vice versa was adopted.

Manja said that this agreement actually simplifies the procedures for the transfer of convicted persons, eliminates the obstacles and differences that exist between the two legal systems, while the beneficiaries of this agreement are the judicial authorities of both countries, but also convicted persons from the perspective of the sentence, which is the rehabilitation of these persons and their reintegration into society.

Minister of Justice, Ulsi Manja, has called some news published in some British media outlets about the transfer of migrants to Albania media speculations.

Manja stressed that “there has been speculation in some British media outlets today claiming that this agreement actually includes the transfer of all persons and refugees who are in the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland to Albania for asylum processing, which is nothing but pure media speculation.”

“We have signed this type of agreement with some EU countries and are in the process of discussions with other countries. It is entirely related to legal cooperation in the field of criminal law and has nothing to do with a centre for processing asylum-seekers. Albania has neither has been nor will be in talks with any EU country to play host to an asylum processing centre.”
