LUXEMBOURG, Oct 19 /ATA/ – The European Union is not complete without the Western Balkans and the EU is trying to help strengthen cooperation in the region, the EU Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Olivér Várhelyi told the Council of Foreign Ministers on Tuesday in Luxembourg.
“The most recent events have shown how deep the divisions run and how much work is needed to build good neighbourly relations in the region,” Várhelyi noted
“The common regional market initiative, Open Balkans initiative, which was agreed by the region’s leaders in Sofia last year, will maximise the benefits of our investments in both physical infrastructure and in the human capital across the region. It will also help strengthening good neighbourly relations,” the EU Commissioner said.
“It is therefore imperative that the region moves forward with its implementation, also to get the maximum benefits from the Economic and Investment Plan,” Várhelyi added.
