TIRANA, June 17 /ATA/ –By I. Vata/ – The opposition MP elect Tritan Shehu rejected claims over irregularities in the last weekend’s contest for the leadership of the main opposition Democratic Party, saying the race was normal, rational and in line with the standards.
Unlike a party faction called “the Group for DP” who claim that the process was marred by irregularities, Shehu told an interview with the Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA) that the process was regular and in line with the standards.
“It was a normal election process, within the standards and the rules that saw the free candidacy of four individuals, with every one of them expressing their opinions. DP leader Basha adhered to his ideas, program and opinions on how to further develop DP, without engaging in conflicts, or inappropriate debates with other candidates,” Shehaj said.
“It was a process that had to be done. Some may claim that the election for the party leadership was accelerated, but this was because of the prompt calls for Basha’s resignation from members of the party’s National Council and the candidacy of a chairmanship member for the party’s leadership. These all set in motion an accelerated mechanism, but the process took place according to the standards, the game rules regarding an internal contest,” he said.
The Group for DP, a political faction within the main opposition party, has accused Lulzim Basha for controlling and manipulating the electoral process for the party leadership.
