TIRANA, June 11/ATA/ Albania is elected a temporary member of the UN Security Council for a two-year term, ’22 -’23, supported by 175 UN member states, out of 190 countries that took part in the vote.
The UN General Assembly voted today for 5 new non-permanent members with a two-year mandate of the UN Security Council, Albania, Gabon, Ghana, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates.
Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Olta Xhaçka cast her vote earlier in the UN General Assembly.
Albania ran in this election as a consensual candidate of the Group of Eastern European Countries.
The election to the Security Council, for the first time after 65 years of membership in the UN, represents a major challenge, but also an excellent opportunity for Albania. /j.p/r.e/p.s./
