30 years since Albania, UK re-established diplomatic relations

TIRANA, May 29 /ATA/ –By I. Vata/ – British Embassy in Tirana commemorated the 30th anniversary of re-establishment of the diplomatic ties between Albania and the United Kingdom on Saturday, saying the Embassy looks forward to further strengthening Great Britain-Albania relations.

“30 years ago today, Albania and the United Kingdom re-established diplomatic relations. Today, we look back on our long-lasting ties and look forward to further strengthening our GB-Albania relations, rooted in deep mutual friendship and shared values of democracy,” UK Embassy said in a statement.

The Embassy notes that “history of Albanians in Britain began with the arrival of Stratioti cavalry who served the English King in 16th Century.

“In 1944, the UK repaid the debt in WW2, when British were fighting alongside Albanian partisan forces. During period from 1921 through 1946, diplomatic relations were initially established in 1921. But the British mission left in April 1946 due to the limitations that the Albanian government had imposed regarding the movement of the members of its mission,” the Embassy said.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were restored on May 29, 1991, exactly 30 years ago, through a joint statement by both parties.

“Since then, the UK keeps supporting Albania and remains its reliable partner! Today we are marking an important date that links our countries and look forward to many more decades together,” British Embassy said.
