TIRANA, April 13 /ATA/ – Et`hem Bey Mosque, a stunning gem of our cultural heritage and a beautiful landmark just off Tirana’s main Skanderbeg Square, has been restored to its former glory on the eve of the Holy month of Ramadan following a colossal work that saw its full restoration down to the last detail.
The Mosque is now the ideal place for the Muslim faithful to start the Holy month of Ramadan.
Tirana Mufti Lauren Luli revealed details of the restoration project in an interview with the Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA) on Tuesday, saying that the meticulous refurbishment work has revealed a series of original elements that were either damaged or covered in the course of time over the years.
“Et’hem Bey Mosque is not just a place of worship for Muslims, but it belongs to all Albanians. It is one of the only mosques and religious sites in the country that has withstood various eras, including the communist regime. It is considered the newest of all mosques. It was built in 1820 and it has been operational since then, excluding the communist regime-era. The special thing about this mosque is the murals inside it: frescoes, aesthetics that also symbolize an Albanian religious site. From the beginning, we demanded that the elements be preserved,” Mufti told ATA.
“The mosque consists of a prayer hall, a portico, and a minaret. The pillars and ceiling of the mosque are decorated with inscriptions and Quranic verses, the 99 Names of God inscribed on the Mosques dome. There are also important writings and prophetic verses on the windows. Another important symbol is the pulpit where the clergyman delivers the religious service and the prayer every Friday. This mosque has now been revived with all its originality,” Tirana Mufti Lauren Luli told ATA.
The restoration project on Et’Hem Bey Mosque in Tirana was funded by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA).
The Et’hem Bey Mosque is one of the most beautiful mosques located in Tirana, Albania. The building of the mosque dates back to 18th century.
