US supports reforms in penitentiary system management

TIRANA, Oct 6 /ATA/ The United States Embassy supports penitentiary management system reforms, including Correctional Officer Training Centers.

As part of the support, earlier this week Ben Rockwell, director of Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, handed over to director general of Penitentiary System, Agim Ismaili, laptops and projectors for the new Training Center.

Modern penitentiary management requires specialized professional training for prison security officers, which is being provided by the Training Center. Ongoing reforms have been designed to balance security against humanitarian and rehabilitation requirements to prepare prisoners for reintegration into society upon their release.

“Reforms must also address the corruption that enables criminal rings to continue to operate outside prisons,” the US embassy said.

According to her, this is a challenge for all penitentiary systems, and a special challenge in Albania.
“The assistance of the United States of America is an investment in the efforts of our partners and as such will make our two countries more secure. “We look forward to seeing the results,” the embassy said.
