“Descent into Hell”, icon painted by Kostandin in 1770

TIRANA, September 24 /ATA/ The icon “Descent into Hell”, by  painter Kostandin, decorated the iconostasis of the church “Fountain of Life”.

In this icon that is preserved in the fund of the Museum of Medieval Art in Korça, Christ appears to have descended triumphantly to hell. Christ is at the center of the composition and steps on the gates of hell which he has exploded.

He raises Adam and Eve from the dead who appear in an ancient sarcophagus. In his left hand he holds a scepter. From the cross of victory a piece of red appears from behind and behind Christ in glory appears the army of angels holding arrows.

On the left side of Christ is John the Baptist, who bows in reverence, followed by prophets, kings, and the group of the right people.

Beneath the broken doors of hell is painted Satan, the fire, and the chains with which the two sarcophagi were bound.

In the upper area of the icon are presented rocks in a very rugged relief that constitutes the environment where the scene takes place. In this icon the painter Konstandin from Korça writes only the year in which he painted the icon 1770./k.s/p.s./
