Constitutional changes empower citizens in decision-making process, no interference with June 5 agreement

TIRANA, July 31 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama reiterated Friday that the constitutional amendments adopted by Parliament a day ago won’t affect the June 5 agreement reached at the Political Council, a working group tasked with developing the Electoral Reform in Albania.

PM Rama stated in a televised interview this is was the right time for the constitutional amendments to be approved.

“This was certainly the right moment for these to be done and this is certainly the right thing. Could have they been done earlier? Of course, if conditions were met, but such conditions were created only recently and we did our best to take advantage and introduce important constitutional novelties that will clear the way towards the citizens’ participation in the electoral process with a stronger voice, since they won’t elect only the party they prefer, but also their preferred MP candidate,” the government head said.

Rama said that the June 5 agreement concerns the election administration only.

“Zero. The agreement is mainly about the election administration with several other aspects which are related to the electoral process and its implementation, whereas the constitutional novelties are about the correcting mechanisms that empower citizens in the decision-making process. There is no interference,” Rama said.

The Premier underlined that the June 5 agreement is not affected at all.

“It is completely irrelevant. They are technicalities concerning the coalition formula, which is no longer the same, yet creation of pre-election coalitions is still possible for every party that want to become a single political subject and run on a joint candidates list,” he concluded.
