Non-Parliamentary opposition: Unilateral constitutional changes destroy consensus

TIRANA, July 30 /ATA/- The United Opposition stated today that “Unilateral constitutional changes destroy the consensus, break and annul the June 5 and January 14 agreements signed by the Socialist Party itself, and have serious consequences for the stability, democracy and European integration of the country.”

Before the start of the plenary session on constitutional changes, in a press statement the United Opposition stated that, “despite our willingness to continue the path of dialogue and consideration in good faith of our proposal for consensus, adhering to the June 5 and January 14 Agreements, the Socialist Party chose the path of abandoning dialogue and moving towards unilateral acts that violate these political agreements signed between the parties. The opposition in yesterday’s meeting showed responsibility and seriousness by presenting the concrete compromise proposal, for opening 100% of the candidate lists. In 5 hours of meetings, the Socialist Party did not give any reason for rejecting our proposal, proving once again the lack of will for dialogue “.

“Bias is not the democratic way to set election rules in an OSCE member state. Bias is the path of autocrats who have abandoned citizens and fear the civic will. Bias is not in the interest of Albania and Albanians, nor in line with the aspirations of citizens for Albania in Europe. The United Opposition is determined to stay true to the interests of Albania and the Albanians. Political dialogue is the only way to find consensus. “No unilateral act is binding on the Opposition, much less on the citizens,” the opposition said in a statement.

“The United Opposition reiterates its appeal to the Socialist Party to find strength and adhere to the Agreements it has signed, renouncing unilateral acts to amend the Constitution and continue the dialogue.”The breaking of the consensus, the breaking and annulment of the agreements it has signed, and the attempts to disrupt the normality of the next elections, are a clear proof of the despair from the loss of power that has long gripped the leadership of the Socialist Party,” said United Opposition./p.s./
