TIRANA, July 29/ATA/ The leaders of the HJC, the Supreme Court, US Ambassador to Albania, Yuri Kim, the EU Ambassador to Albania, Luigi Soreca attended Wednesday the Presentation of the Roadmap to High Court Functionality Event organized by the Justice for All project (USAID ), EURALIUS V and High Judicial Council.
During the joint meeting it was discussed about the importance of this Roadmap within the functionality of the Supreme Court, which today is the center of attention of national and international factors.
The meeting also focused on the functioning of the High Court, i.e. structures defined by law, both judicial and administrative, should be set up to the extent that they allow the Court to deal reasonably with backlog cases and new ones.
“High Judicial Council and the High Court are facing a very difficult situation in terms of the functionality of this court. Both institutions recognize that the functioning of the Supreme Court is essential for the judiciary in Albania and, most importantly, for the citizens of Albania. Access to justice remains a key priority for both the Council and the Court,” the chairwoman of HJC, Naureda Llagami said.
“The well-performing judicial systems are established on a strong foundation of building the bonds of public trust; focusing on accountability and transparency; and engaging in proactive communication. The U.S. supports Albania’s justice reform, as you know, and your accession goals, as well. Our support is strong and will remain so. And I am personally committed as the representative of the President of the United States do to everything I can to support the restoration of the High Court, in order to pave another stone to achieving broader democratic and security objectives,” the US Ambassador to Albania Yuri Kim said.
“The lack of a functional High Court leads to a lack of decision-making and to a decline in the public’s trust in judiciary and Justice Reform. To resolve this situation it is necessary to enhance cooperation between the parties and show great responsibility and readiness,” the EU Ambassador to Albania Luigi Soreca said.
In his remarks, Ambassador Soreca praised the commitment and work of the three members of the Supreme Court during the first three months of their appointment, and highly assessed the vision of the Deputy Chairman of HJC on transparency and prompt publication of the court decisions and activities, to reduce the number of court cases. //a.i/
