Lawmaker Kushi: Constitutional amendments do not infringe on June 5 agreement

TIRANA, July 28  /ATA/ – The current formula of the pre-electoral coalitions does not ensure equality of arms and a fair balance among the small and big political parties in elections, the Socialist lawmaker Evis Kushi said in a televised interview on Tuesday.

Kushi reiterated that the Socialist Party will remain loyal to the June 5 agreement and not a single comma of the document will be omitted.

“We remain consistent with our position regarding the amendments to the Constitution that will be adopted on July 30. We support the open lists system and the agreement we have reached with the parliamentary opposition. We have adopted by 99 votes the changes to the Electoral Code by fully respecting the June 5 agreement with the extra-parliamentary opposition, by respecting also the opposition’s demands and addressing the OSCE recommendations. We also wanted to depoliticize the electoral administration, but the extra-parliamentary opposition did not agree on that, even though that OSCE has insisted on addressing this issue for years now,” Kushi said.

Kushi said that the arrest of 22 election commissioners earlier today and the so-called Case 339 justifies the Socialist Party’s drive to build a depoliticized election administration.
