TIRANA, July 16 /ATA/- President Ilir Meta called the idea of the opposition to burn the mandates, an event that happened last March, as silly and he stressed that the Assembly has no legitimacy to implement the constitutional changes, which were approved two days ago in principle in the committee of laws.
In weekly communication with journalists, Meta stated that such an act will not be recognized by the President of the Republic.
“I will exercise all my constitutional functions to prevent such an unprecedented action in 3 decades of pluralism.
“Such an act will not be recognized by the President of the Republic”, stressed Meta.
“I considered the June 5 agreement accomplished. “This agreement, as you know, was supported by representatives of the international community in Tirana and by the Secretary of State, Pompeo”, – said Meta.
“The other agreement breaks the one of June and damages our Foreign Minister and his quality as the head of the OSCE. The agreement paves the way for the fulfillment of the first 15 conditions. These constitutional changes are contrary to the principles of the Venice Commission and are the only guide to democratic elections. “The OSCE in Tirana has also indicated that it is too late for changes,” Meta added.
“The proposal for constitutional changes, zeroes the 9-month efforts to find a consensus. It is imperative that the political parties adhere to the agreement, especially since the internationals have also invested. “Legal changes must be made 1 year before the elections,” Meta explained.
“I emphasize repeatedly that the Assembly does not have the constitutional legitimacy to implement these changes. The Assembly has only 82 legitimate deputies who have won the mandate from the electoral process, which includes 3 opposition deputies, who rightly refused to resign with the opposition deputies. “After removing the bloc of 58 deputies of the united opposition, we can say that they were not part of the Assembly,” Meta said./a.g/p.s./
