Roth: Western Balkans at center of EU commitment towards enlargement process

TIRANA, July 14/ATA/- Germany will put the Western Balkans at the center of its commitment to enlargement, the German Minister of State for Europe at the Federal Foreign Office, Michael Roth told DW.

The European Union is now supporting the Western Balkans pledging 3.3 billion euros to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, but during the German presidency other topics related to the Western Balkans will be high on the agenda.

In his remarks, Roth emphasized that “the Western Balkans is our inner courtyard and serves our interests.”

Minister Roth said that,” during the EU presidency, Germany will take a more committed stand to promote democracy, rule of law and the respect for fundamental rights in the Western Balkans, which are also the main engines of economic integration and the essential anchor for fostering regional reconciliation and stability. But above all giving the new generation a perspective.”

“We will hold a conference on the future of the new generation in the Western Balkans. EU should take more responsibility to bring stability and prosperity to the citizens of the region,” he said. //a.i/
