Political Council reaches agreement on Electoral Code, emigrants’ vote and CEC

TIRANA, June 24 /ATA/- The Political Council has concluded by consensus today’s meeting on Electoral Reform, where the proposals of the opposition for the Central Election Commission (CEC) have been accepted and the way has been opened for the Diaspora to vote.

The Co-Chair of the Electoral Reform Damian Gjiknuri said after the meeting that, “We agreed on all the remaining points, whether for the Central Election Commission, or on the composition formula, the CEC mandates and many other elements that had remained under discussion. In general, we met the requirements of the Democratic Party for those guarantees that existed in the current law, despite the fact that some of the ODIHR standards required changes”.

“However, it is more important for us that the election law reflects the concerns, fears or the recent past of the opposition, in order to go to the polls with a universally accepted law,” he said.

“These were difficult negotiations due to the created political climate and for the first time Albania was in a three-pole political situation, where it was teased by one party that is in the Assembly and the other party that has burned mandates. The important thing is that we have a universally accepted electoral law, not the best, not with all the standards, but accepted by all parties “, he said./r.e//a.a/p.s./
