Veliaj: Competition on National Theatre project based on design by Danish architect Ingels

TIRANA, May 20 /ATA/ – The new National Theatre project will be based on the contemporary design developed by the Danish architect Bjarke Ingels and it will include an underground car parking, the Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj said in a televised interview on Wednesday.

Veliaj said that a competition will be held for the project implementation and the concept will be the one designed by the renowned Danish architect.

“The Theatre design is prepared by Bjarke Ingels, the best architect in the world. A competition will take place and the Municipality’s interest is to construct the new National Theatre up to highest quality, but at lowest cost possible. We want to build a huge underground car parking for the ministries and other state institutions close to the site. All these will take three or four months and we will then announce the competition,” Veliaj said.

Tirana Mayor said that the initial calculations estimate that the project will cost around 30 million euro and a construction loan will cover the costs of the project. He said that 17 commercial banks have offered to support the project and the loan repayment will begin in 2025.

“The National Theatre will be built on a property owned by the Municipality of Tirana. We still don’t know how we will develop this estate. We can build a parking lot, a hotel, business offices,” Veliaj said.

Tirana Mayor said that completely legal procedures were enforced regarding the demolition of the old building and authorities acted quickly after the Construction Institute classified the building as a dangerous structure.
