Gjiknuri: Agreement with opposition to complete electoral reform within May

TIRANA, May 12 /ATA/- Co-chair of Electoral Reform Committee, Damian Gjiknuri, said that along with opposition we agreed that Electoral Reform will be complete within May and the next meeting will focus on outstanding issues.

In a televised interview, he said that a part of issues agreed upon will be presented by the experts in the next meeting, which also includes a discussion of electoral system, since it has not been fully exhausted. During our discussion of the electoral system issues, the opposition did not table any proposal so I have to guess what opposition stands for at this point.

We, he said, have listened to all parties on the table. We have requested the opinion of experts on amendments that could tamper with the constitution and ,if so, we need to explore the possibilities of approaching their suggestions in the best way possible.

“SP sees no problem with the current electoral system whatsoever. In our opinion, it is very good and the problem with elections does not rest on formulations for translation of mandates but on other aspects leading to phenomena of politicizing the elections and leveling mutual allegations,” Gjiknuri said.

According to him, unless we reach a consensus with parliamentary and extra-parliamentary opposition on the issue of electoral system, we are willing to come to compromise on the system taking into account our political interests.

Speaking about the type of system, Gjiknuri explained that there are open-ended lists, national proportional system with proportional correction, so there are several options in play as long as the opposition, that in parliament included, has a unified position at this point.
