TIRANA, February 23/ATA/-The Chairman of the Democratic Party in opposition Lulzim Basha said today that he supports the public rally called by the President for the Constitution.
“Albania is in a deep constitutional crisis, besides the economic crisis that all Albanians experience daily. As citizens, we cannot close our eyes when the rule of law is taken hostage, when the institutions are destroyed, and democracy is at stake. The capture of the Constitutional Court means destroying every citizen’s rights and freedoms. We cannot accept that Albania returns 30 years back”, said Basha.
He said that, “the President’s call is not addressed to the political parties, or to the right or the left, but to the Albanian citizens to defend the foundation of democracy, i.e. the Constitution.”
“As citizens who want the country to take steps towards consolidating democracy, we must respond to every call for protection of the Constitution and the democratic functioning of independent institutions. That’s why I support the rally called by the President for the Constitution,” said Basha.
The DP leader said that, “We must always remember that the sovereign is the people and the highest exercise of this power is to remove this failed government by free and fair elections.”
“There is a democratic solution: the completion in time of the electoral reform and the immediate holding of free and fair elections. The Democratic Party and the United Opposition are working on this every day and with the support of the citizens the change will become a reality,” concluded Basha./m.m/p.s./
