TIRANA, December 13 /ATA/- Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj and his counterpart, Brussels Mayor Philippe Close spent the day today in Peza, where they jointly distributed food, clothing and various aid equipment to earthquake victims, as well as visited the place where were housed the pupils of the “16 September” school, which will be rebuilt from scratch.
The day kicked off with international chefs from World Central Kitchen and Chef Bledar Kola cooking hot meals for families affected by the earthquake in Peza and Ndroq, as well as the children of the “16 September” school.
Veliaj thanked the Brussels mayor for choosing to spend the day on the ground looking closely at the situation left behind by the earthquake, but also to serve the affected families.
“I am very grateful to him and the staff who came from Brussels. Instead of meeting in the office, we decided to head out on the ground where we saw a fantastic effort by some notable US chefs who are cooking for all the kids and families in need of Peza; then, we had a visit to the place where we transferred the students of “16 September” school, a provisional area where the children have begun their normal life,” said he.
The two mayors also visited some of the homes and educational institutions damaged by the November 26 earthquake.
“I look forward to planning with Philip the recovery of one of the damaged schools. There are 10 schools in the whole of Tirana that need to be built from scratch”, said Veliaj.
Brussels Mayor Philippe Close expressed full solidarity with Albania in the difficult moments caused by the November 26 earthquake, and stressed that the rebuilding phase is a good opportunity to do things better and come to the aid of those most in need.
