TIRANA, November 10/ATA/- November is Diabetes Awareness Month. In an interview with the Albanian Telegraphic Agency, Doctor Florian Toti said that in Albania more people die from diabetes than from breast cancer.
According to him, the early diagnosis of the disease, proper nourishment and physical activity are the main factors in preventing the disease. The doctor also called for lifestyle changes to prevent the disease.
“More people die in Albania from diabetes than from breast cancer. The diabetes awareness ribbon is blue. We can do a lot to prevent type-2 diabetes and reduce 30-50% of the cases with diabetes. It means there will be less than 1500 diabetics in Albania annually. Every year, in Albania are recorded 3 to 5 thousand new cases of diabetes, the majority of whom being type-2 diabetes,” said the doctor.
“In total, in Albania there can be 100 or 120 thousand people affected by diabetes. It is a very high figure and it is increasing year by year. And above all we have about 4% of the population with pre-diabetes, so part of the population that is predisposed, is not exactly with diabetes but if it doesn’t make the lifestyle changes within the next five or ten years will certainly suffer from diabetes, ”concluded the doctor./j.p/p.s./
