Balla: Resolution safeguards Albanian democracy against any foreign interference

TIRANA, Oct 29 /ATA/-By Maela Marini/ – The head of the Socialist Party’s parliamentary group Taulant Balla put emphasis on the need to safeguard the democratic process against foreign interference in elections and disinformation in Albania, saying the Albanian Assembly will adopt a resolution against any foreign election meddling and the fake news.

“The 2021 general elections are nearing and therefore we need to adopt legislation and enhance our democratic system’s protection against foreign election meddling,” the Socialist official told reporters on Tuesday.

Balla underlined that the resolution follows the suit after European Union has adopted actions against fake news and foreign electoral interference around three weeks ago and it is designed to address essential matters concerning interference of foreign actors in the democratic election processes.

“The European Parliament has taken a tough stance on this issue and has pointed a finger to Russia as a foreign meddler in the election processes in several EU member states,” Balla said.

According to him, Albania has registered a serious case of foreign electoral interference through illegal funding provided by a political party (Democratic Party) and prosecutors are looking into the case.

The second part of the resolution – according to Balla – has to do with disinformation and the fake news phenomenon.
