Croatia backs opening EU membership negotiations with Albania

TIRANA, Oct 7 /ATA/ – Acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Gent Cakaj met with Croatian Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Gordan Grlić Radman, on Monday.

The meeting focused on the bilateral cooperation with particular emphasis being put on efforts to promote economic interconnection, cultural and youth mobility and the development of the Adriatic belt.

“Serving the common goal of further deepening the regional cooperation, we agreed to launch the trilateral meetings between Albania, the Republic of Kosovo and Croatia. The cooperation, apart from direct profits, will also foster the region’s Euro-Atlantic aspiration,” Cakaj said following the meeting.

The two interlocutors reaffirmed Albania’s and Croatia’s shared commitment to press ahead with implementation of regional projects, namely the Blue Corridor and the Ionian Adriatic Pipeline project.

“Croatia today also sent a strong message of support for Albania’s European aspirations, not only by backing opening the EU membership negotiations in October, but also by including Albania’s negotiation process at heart of the Balkan Conference as part of the 2020 Croatian EU Presidency,” Cakaj concluded.
