Prosecution concluding statement / Tahiri: I am interested in justice, wait for Court ruling

TIRANA, Sept 10 /ATA / – The Serious Crimes Prosecution demanded on Tuesday 12 years in prison for former Interior Minister Saimir Tahiri, who is charged with collaborating with a criminal group trafficking narcotics as a structured criminal group and committing offenses as a structured group.

The serious crimes prosecutors presented their findings and closing arguments earlier today. Former Interior Minister Saimir Tahiri, former Vlora police director Jaeld Çela, and former police officers Sokol Bode and Gjergj Kohila are all charged with trafficking narcotics.

Former Interior Minister Saimir Tahiri arrived for today’s session at the Serious Crimes Court in Tirana accompanied by his lawyer Maks Haxhia.

During the latest session in July, the Serious Crimes Court accepted Tahiri’s request for a summary trial, a ruling that orders for the investigation to continue and automatically reduces his sentence to one third.

After the today’s session, where the prosecutors presented their closing arguments, two more hearings are expected to take place: one for defence lawyers and the last for the court announcing the decision, which can be appealed by the parties within 15 days after its ruling.

“This is the most important battle in my life. I resigned as lawmaker to face justice without having power,” Tahiri said after prosecutors read closing arguments.

“I am looking forward for the Sept 19. I will be waiting for the Court ruling. I am interested in justice together with freedom. I want to be free,” he stated.
