TIRANA, July 24 /ATA/ –By I. Vata/ – Chairman of the Democratic Party Lulzim Basha voiced Wednesday the opposition support for activists and artists who protested earlier today to reject plans for demolition of the current National Theatre to make way for a new theatre building.
A group of artists and activists from the Alliance for the Protection of the National Theatre, supported also by former opposition lawmakers, who opposed the police’s intervention, calling on them to leave from the current Theatre’s site.
Police surrounded the National Theatre building to make sure that workers remove movable materials from the building.
Former opposition lawmakers and the DP leader joined the protest.
“We support the Alliance for the Protection of the National Theatre by resorting to any forms and means to stop this criminal theft,” DP chairman Lulzim Basha said, expressing solidarity with the theatre actors.
A number of protestors, also supported by the DP leader and ex-opposition parliamentarians, entered inside the building and occupied the theatre following clashes with police.
