TIRANA, June 27/ATA/-President of the Republic Ilir Meta set October 13 the new date for holding the local elections.
Today, the president issued the relevant decree setting the new Election Day.
Meta gave two reasons to support his decision.
« First of all, it’s the nearest date to organize all-embracing local elections for all those who want to take part in the elections and which according to procedural deadlines want to get involved in the electoral process », said he.
« Secondly, as I have already said on June 8 when I cancelled the June 30 elections, one of the conditions to be met has to do with guaranteeing continuity of the European integration and Albania and North Macedonia together open the EU accession negotiations”, emphasized Meta.
The president pointed to the time lost, but emphasized that, « Fortunate enough, we are still in the EU agenda for opening of the negotiations. And the EU decision is on October 17-18”, said Meta.
Further on, the president added that no one can force people to turn out in elections if they are not willing to.
“President of the Republic is responsible and on behalf of the unity of the people all should have the opportunity to reflect and become part of the process”, said Meta./gj.mima/p.s./
