TIRANA, June 23 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama said Sunday at an electoral campaign meeting in the municipality of Dropull, southern Albania, that the Socialist Party’s traditional opponents have embarked on a desperate offensive in a bid to take elections and Albania’s European integration hostage.
“It may sound as an exaggeration, yet it is easy to understand if one considers the entire destructive process they have embarked on: an escalation of tough and hatred speech and a mudslinging campaign in the daily political life, abandonment of parliament, relinquishment of the parliamentary mandates, images of violent street protests of the municipal workers and masked young people who hurl Molotov bombs, creating troubling scenes for the citizens and the international community alike,” Rama said.
“Most recently, airing some intercepted phone conversation as shocking evidence of some truths discovered in Germany, which indeed were the Prosecution’s materials since 2016 and about which no investigation has been carried out and nobody was punished, but instead these evidences were kept locked and handed over to the political party to release them when party needs them most,” the Premier stated.
The Socialist Party leader said that opposition leaders fear that EU membership negotiations would open with a focus on the judiciary.
“The EU accession negotiations start with the justice system and Albania should demonstrate it has built a functioning justice system that ensures equality before the low for everyone, a justice system that doesn’t distinguish between the ordinary citizens and powerful and influential individuals. This is a strong reason for them to take a crazy path by trying to sow fear, anxiety and insecurity,” Rama stated. /j.p/u.sh/
