EU warnings on visa-regime, Meta demands preventive measures

TIRANA, June 18/ATA/ -President of the Republic Ilir Meta has demanded today immediate measures to avoid the risk of re-introduction of the Schengen visa regime for Albania.

The president emphasized in a press statement that he has followed with great attention all the discussions that are taking place regarding Albania’s integration process in the EU.

According to him, “As all the attention has been directed on a possible positive decision on Albania opening the EU accession negotiations, the president has noticed with deep concern the risk of re-introduction of the Schengen visa regime for Albania”.

“Following the request by the Netherlands to suspend the visa-free travel for the Albanians addressed to the European Commission, European Commissioner for Migration and Home Affairs – Dimitris Avramopoulos warning steps against Albania is an alarm bell for all”, notes Meta.

The president appealed to all the relevant state institutions to follow this matter with priority because it’s highly sensitive for all the Albanian citizens.

“Visa free travel has been a great achievement for the Albanians as the people that has suffered the most total isolation in the region”, emphasized Meta.

“I call for urgent measures to be taken against anything that might damage or lose the visa-free travel by the Albanians”, said Meta./gj.mima/ /a.g/p.s./
