Mogherini: Decision on opening negotiations for accession for Albania and North Macedonia to be taken as soon as possible

TIRANA, June 17/ATA/- Ahead of the regular meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on June 17,2019, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, as well as the Vice President of the EU Commission, Federica Mogherini speaking to the media, emphasized that, “Today is exactly one year after, the signing of the historic of Prespa – agreement between Greece and North Macedonia, and I think we need to remind ourselves the power of leadership and courage and important steps that have been taken in the Western Balkans, and I hope that Member States will remember this and acknowledge the steps forward, in particular in the coming days with an important decision to be taken on opening of the negotiations for accession both for Albania and North Macedonia. I hope and I believe should be done as soon as possible.”

“Today we will have an agenda focused mainly on the implementation of our global strategy. We will have the foreign and defence ministers of the 28th joining together. It sounds very theoretical but it is indeed the work we have done in the European Union defence, the work that still needs to be done, but also our support to multilateralism to the UN system, to the global agenda and, the way in which we work as a union on the global affairs, and how we can be even more a point of reference in the world. So I know that the current affairs are pressing and are many and I would be happy to answer to all your questions about that later in the day. But today we will also try to have a strategic look on how the EU can play its role in the world, in the moment when it’s most needed,” Mogherini concluded.//a.i/
