TIRANA, June 13 /ATA/ -Justice Minister Etilda Gjonaj stated today that the international partners have given support for the June 30 municipal elections in Albania.
“June 30 is indispensability for justice reform. It implies respect of the Constitution and law and respect of the right of the citizens to vote”, said Gjonaj.
Speaking at the Parliament today, convened on the motion of debate about president’s cancelling election date; Gjonaj said that, “There is no threat to the irreversible justice reform.”
“According to the Constitution, it is an obligation and power of the president to set the election date. But, the Constitution has not foreseen him to undo the date. The reason why the president has this competence is that he embodies the unity of the people”, said Gjonaj.
Further on, Gjonaj argued that the Constitution has defined that the elections cannot be held after the date when the mandate of the Constitutional organs expires.
“Every other election date that the president sets is a violation of the Constitution”, concluded Gjonaj. /gj.mima/ /a.g/p.s./
