Opening EU accession negotiations would facilitate reform process in Albania

TIRANA, June 11 /ATA/ – Speaker of the Albanian Assembly Gramoz Ruçi on Tuesday received a German’s Bundestag delegation in Tirana led by Josip Juratovic, Bundestag member and head of the parliamentary group of SPD and head of parliamentary group for South East Europe, who is paying a visit to the region.

The delegation included Renata Alt, member of Bundestag and Deputy Chairwoman of FDP parliamentary group, Hansjörg Müller, member of AfD parliamentary group.

Assembly Speaker Gramoz Ruçi expressed gratitude for the fact that the European Commission has affirmed Albania’s efforts and accomplishments by recommending to EU Council to open the EU membership negotiations, taking into account results in delivering on the five key priorities and deepening far-reaching reforms.

Ruçi voiced his confidence in Bundestag’s support to authorize German government give green light to the opening of negotiations with Albania, based on the country’s progress and reforms.

“Opening the accession talks would further facilitate reform process in Albania, strengthen support for European project among the Albanian citizens and would boost peace and stability in the region. Germany as Europe’s political and economic locomotive has played a crucial role in fulfilling the main criteria regarding reforms,” Ruçi said.

German lawmaker Josip Juratovic underlined that “Albania’s and Western Balkans’ European perspective is a continued priority for the Bundestag.

“The Bundestag has been informed about the European Commission’s report that recommends unconditional opening of the membership negotiations. However, for time reasons we will review this recommendation by fall,” he said.

“I also want to convey a message to the Albanian politicians. You should all clearly know that boycotting parliament is an unacceptable action for our democratic standards. We are ready to assist and want you to clearly tell us your priority needs. Parliament members should always represent the citizens’ interest,” Juratovic said.

Assembly Speaker Ruçi and German Bundestag members discussed political situation in Albania and recent developments in the region.
