May 5, car-free day in Tirana

TIRANA, April 17/ATA/-The cars are the main polluters of the air in Tirana, said Mayor Erion Veliaj during a meeting organized by the Hungarian embassy for promotion of technology in the well-management of the cities.

While referring to the opportunity that “Tirana Ime” application offers on measurement of the level of air pollution in Tirana, he provided some data showing that in the spots with the greatest movement of vehicles and in the peak hours, the pollution level of the air is higher than usual.

“There are four apparatuses installed in the main pillars of the four main squares and crossroads in Tirana which provide the measurements taken and help in the decision-making. The decision on the car-free day in Tirana was taken following data received from the application”, said Veliaj.

The PM2.5 and PM10 particulates at 8 o’clock in the morning and 5 p.m. when people come back home are higher, said Veliaj.

Therefore, Veliaj said that Tirana will pursue environment policies that encourage less movement of the people by car.

This is also the reason, there will be more car-free days in Tirana beginning from May 5.

“After the Summer Day, the next car-free day is May 5. It happens to be the Martyrs’ Day and is a great opportunity to leave the cars and honour the people who fought for this country, but even to give some time to Tirana to ventilate”, added Veliaj./k.s/p.s./
