New lawmakers, Shehu: CEC took an anti-Constitutional action

TIRANA, April 12/ATA/ – “The ruling majority has created a fictitious opposition which is beyond the Albanian reality”, stated today the former lawmaker of the Democratic Party in opposition Tritan Shehu during an interview on television.

Shehu mentioned a ruling of the Constitutional Court dating 1993 that defines in a crystal clear way that, “There cannot be taken from the party lists individuals to be given the mandate of lawmaker when they don’t belong any more to that party”.

Thus, the Central Election Commission (CEC) took an anti-Constitutional step and we don’t have anywhere to appeal because at present there is no Constitutional Court in Albania, said Shehu.

Likewise, Shehu said that the decision of the opposition lawmakers to resign from the Parliament was indispensable for the time being.

Further on, Shehu said that, “The ruling majority says it will hold elections even without the opposition. But, elections without the opposition would be a funny and tragic spectacle of dire consequences for the country”.

Speaking about dialogue with the majority, Shehu said that, “We were in dialogue with the majority, we were in the Parliament, but it was a dialogue when the other side didn’t listen. Thus, it was a monologue because none of the opposition proposals was taken under consideration”.

Further on, Shehu emphasized the fact that Albania has not had any Constitutional Court for two years and it would have been the final arbiter to disputes.

Under these circumstances, Shehu added that the dialogue would be unnecessary and even harmful because it would create a false façade on the anti-democratic and autocratic condition of the country./a.g/p.s./
