Election reform, Balla: Open to consensus with opposition

TIRANA, April 1 /ATA/ – By I. Vata/ – “We are open to consensus with opposition, which is crucial for our European agenda,” the chairman of SP parliamentary group, Taulant Balla, said in a televised interview hailing the new approach of opposition to enter the elections.

Speaking about the extension of deadline for Ad-Hoc Parliamentary Committee for Electoral Reform, Balla said that this committee has done a great job.
We could have passed it in December, because what is contained in draft is a transposition of recommendations into amendments to the Electoral Code. Continuation of reforms is a must for Albania. All Albanians know that it is not the electoral reform that has made DP walk out of parliament, it is not the draft which need to be worked out with their consent, it is the fear of justice reform implementation,” he said.

Balla went on saying that the opposition is against the electoral reform, justice reform.
Speaking about the protests and demands of opposition, Balla said that there are two reasons: fear of new justice system and the effort to affect the European Council decision-making in June.

The current leadership of opposition Kryemadhi- Basha see the landmark moment of opening the EU accession negotiations as a slap on their face and would do everything in their capacity to hamper, smear and mudsling Albania on eve of decision-making.

Asked about the electoral theft, Balla said that 2017 elections have been certified by OSCE/ODHIR. The European Commission said that the outcome of elections has been recognized by all parties, Lulzim Basha accepted the elections.

Asked whether the majority would enter the elections without the opposition, Balla said he welcomed the new approach of DP which is gearing up to enter the local elections.” I am very much hopeful that DP will take part in local elections. Unless opposition enters the elections, we will fulfil our legal obligation, taking part in June 30 elections.”
