TIRANA, June 18 / ATA /- The beautiful landscapes, cultural monuments and crystal waters are attracting more and more foreign and domestic tourists to Albania this year.
One of the most interesting monuments related to its history and location is the Porto Palermo castle, in the bay of Porto Palermo, a few kilometers south of Himara, southern Albania.
The Regional Directorate of National Culture, in Vlora told Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA) that, “since January to mid-June the Porto Palermo castle was visited by 3.753 tourists, most of whom foreigners.”
The Porto Palermo beach is near the castle of Porto Palermo ( also known as the castle of Vsiliqia ) is a small bay but very beautiful , with white cliffs and the sea looks like a personal pool. Certainly do not leave without visiting the castle of Vasiliqi, built by Ali Pasha 19th century.
The castle would have been vulnerable to cannon fire from the hill above and this also suggests an early date for its construction when cannon had not developed the range they had later. In 1662 the Venetians feared the Turks would recondition it.
In 1803 Ali Pasha offered the castle and port to the Royal Navy. At which time the fort only had 4 or 5 cannon implying that Ali Pasha did not see the fort as important for him. //a.i/
