Et’hem Bey Mosque undergoes restoration works

TIRANA, May 17/ATA/- Et’hem Bey Mosque in central Tirana is being restored in the context of the “Ways of Faith” programme.

Prime Minister Edi Rama posted on the social media a photo from the restoration works of the mosque emphasizing that the programme enables restoration of the objects of the Cult as part of promotion of cultural tourism.

“Here’s a photo showing the restoration site of Et’hem Bey Mosque in Tirana, part of the programme “Ways of Faith” that enables restoration of the objects of the cult as part of development of cultural tourism. I wish to all the Muslim believers a good fast day”, writes PM Rama on the Facebook.

Construction works on Et’hem Bey Mosque started in 1791 or 1794 by Molla Bey and it was finished in 1819 or 1821 by his son Haxhi Ethem Bey, grand-grandson of Suleiman Pasha.

This is a unique mosque, the only one fully preserved among 20 similar mosques, built in the second half of the XIII century. It represents an important value of our cultural heritage.

Frescoes outside and in the portico depict trees, waterfalls and bridges – motifs rarely seen in Islamic art.

The Mosque today, constitutes of an architectural complex together with the Clock Tower of Tirana. Tours of the mosque are given daily, though not during prayer service.

It’s one of the most attractive objects for the tourists and visitors to the capital and it’s a substantial object of our collective awareness./gj.mima/ /a.g/p.s./
