TIRANA, June 1 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Monday he would not give up on his vision of making Albania a major global tourism destination, referencing investment plans in Zvërnec that have drawn criticism from environmentalists and civil society groups.

Speaking at a Socialist Party parliamentary meeting, Rama warned that reverting to past policies risked repeating flawed development models such as those seen in Golem.

Prime Minister Rama has said the country should aim to join the “Champions League of global tourism” by attracting high-end investment.

Speaking to Socialist Party MPs, he argued that extraordinary projects such as the planned development in Zvërnec were essential if Albania was to compete internationally. He warned that reverting to past approaches risked repeating flawed models of growth, citing the case of Golem as an example of poor planning.

“The ability and courage to drag Albania back to Golem is still alive and ready if the country falls again into old hands,” he told lawmakers.

PM stated that he will not give up on his vision of turning the country into a global tourism destination, saying Albania must aim for what he called the “Champions League of tourism.”

Addressing Socialist Party MPs, Rama said he would not remain in power simply to lead a country that was afraid of major investment challenges. He argued that Albania was no longer a place shunned by investors, but one where “everyone wants to come,” pointing to the record 12 million tourists who visited.

He went on saying that the country must now move into the elite of global tourism by attracting high-end consumers whose spending would stay in Albania. He warned against returning to past models of development, such as those seen in Golem, which he described as flawed and damaging.

Prime Minister Rama has outlined plans for a major tourism investment in Zvërnec, saying international partners have joined forces to invest around €4 billion.

Addressing Socialist Party MPs, Rama said the funds used to acquire land had been verified both by Albanian institutions under anti-money laundering procedures and by international partners. He described the project as “extraordinary,” contrasting it with past developments in Tirana where, he argued, builders erected apartment blocks and left residents without proper property titles.

“This is not a country that fears extraordinary projects,” Rama said, adding that Albania must embrace large-scale investment to consolidate its position in global tourism.
