He said that Margarita Xhepa died peacefully, despite the health problems of the last two months.

Minister of Culture Blendi Gonxhja expressed condolences for the great artist, highlighting the significance of her unforgettable work for Albanian culture and art.

“Margarita Xhepa left an extraordinary legacy that will be etched to the memory of the Albanian people. She will also be the pride of our nation and art,” he said.

The leader of the Democratic Party Sali Berisha also paid tribute today to the well-known actress Margarita Xhepa.

Speaking to reporters, Berisha expressed, “The deepest condolences, but also the boundless gratitude for the extraordinary contribution of Margarita Xhepa in seven decades, like no other on the Albanian stage and film”.

Margarita Xhepa performed over 150 characters in theater and 32 in cinema.

She was distinguished since 1960 in performance of Ophelia in the Shakespearean tragedy “Hamlet”.

In 2007, she received the “Career Award” for performing Nadezhna in Anton Chekhov’s “Swan Song”.

Some of the characters she masterfully interpreted are the pianist in “Concert in 1936” movie (1978) and Lena in “Bloody Land” (1976). Xhepa has also been honored with “People’s Artist” award.

Attending the activity organized on occasion of the 90th birth anniversary of Margarita Xhepa, there were Minister of Economy, Culture and Innovation Blendi Gonxhja, the well-known actress Tinka Kurti, actress Yllka Mujo, other well-known actors of the Albanian stage, friends.

In his speech, Gonxhja said that, “Today, we celebrate the birthday of one of the pearls of our cinema necklace with so many contributions to Albanian art”.

“Margarita Xhepa is a precious icon of this nation; she is an artist who gave life to and immortalized so many characters that are so deeply engraved in the memory of millions of Albanians”, emphasized Gonxhja.

Minister Gonxhja said that, “This activity brings us back to her journey as a cinematographic star, where every year that passes makes her more shining”.

“Margarita, as time has confirmed, with the charm and nobility that characterizes you, you are the pride of this country”, said Gonxhja.

On her part, Actress Margarita Xhepa thanked Minister Gonxhja for the organized activity reminding that, “In my hometown, in Lushnja, it was not a custom to celebrate girls’ birthdays. Later, my sons wanted to celebrate my birthday, but I told them not to. I’m used to it. So, today is the first birthday I celebrate at this age”.

Xhepa also took the opportunity to remind the beginnings of her career when while giving an exam at the Artistic High School, she was selected by director Pandi Stillu and approved by Director of the Theatre Kolë Jakova to join the theater as an actress and at the same time to do the Artistic High School as well”, said Xhepa.
