TIRANA, Aug 12 /ATA/ – The lake town of Pogradec in south-eastern Albania is experiencing one of its most successful tourism seasons in recent years, driven by affordable prices, natural beauty, and cultural attractions, local officials said on Tuesday.

Mayor of Pogradec, Ilir Xhakolli, told Albanian Telegraphic Agency (ATA) that more than 35,000 tourists have been accommodated in local hotels and guesthouses so far this season, including around 12,000 foreign visitors.

Family-based tourism is reportedly even higher, with hundreds of second homes hosting visitors from across Albania.

“The affordability of accommodation and services makes Pogradec a highly attractive and sustainable destination,” Xhakolli told ATA.

The municipality has 44 hotels, 17 guesthouses, and numerous private residences listed for tourism. Public beaches, most of which are free to access and equipped with umbrellas, make up the majority of the lakefront, with special facilities also available for people with disabilities.

Efforts to promote the area include multilingual tourist guides, maps, and a functioning information center assisting visitors with local attractions such as the Drilon National Park, Tushemisht and Lin villages, and cultural sites like the Selca Tombs and the Lin Basilica.

The local government has also invested in seasonal preparations, including expanded green spaces, city beautification, and a summer events calendar known as “100 Days of Summer,” offering cultural and sports activities for both locals and tourists.

Pogradec, located on the shores of Lake Ohrid, has gained popularity for its clean environment, lakeside setting, and combination of history, nature, and traditional cuisine.
