TIRANA, March 2 /ATA/ Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Olta Xhaçka, stated on Thursday that the opposition is dealing with conspiracy theories and bringing up an issue that does not exist, because it has run out of ideas, alternatives or proposals.
In her remarks in parliament, where the motion is being debated with Prime Minister Edi Rama for involvement in the McGonigal affair, Xhaçka said that it is a pity to waste so much time and energy on an issue that is not an issue per se.

“Over the years, the opposition has brought up many other issues like this, instead of dealing with issues that really interest the citizens and have an impact on them. It repeats the same old story of cooking up a conspiracy theory after the prior one has turned out to be untrue. “

According to Xhaçka, these conspiracy theories are trumpeted and passed off as causes of political war every time justice knocks on the door.

“There is an investigation going on in the US on McGonigal that is irrelevant to the Albanian state or Prime Minister. Yes, the Prime Minister has met McGonigal, as every Albanian Prime Minister of the post-dictatorship would meet McGonigal if the opportunity arose, because meeting the head of the FBI’s counterintelligence, as a strategic partner and ally of the USA, is quite normal. Anyone who has a shred of doubt about this should ask themselves a very simple question: Does anyone think that the US would have the level of cooperation they have with Albania if even a grain of what the opposition says about the McGonigal case were true, that the prime minister was doing what neither Iran, nor Russia, nor North Korea has done by corrupting the head of counterintelligence of the FBI?! “, she added.
The minister stated that relations with the USA are today at their best.

“This is the truth and you all know this truth very well, not because I say it, but because the facts speak for themselves and the US representatives themselves have proved such a thing. Not far from Tuesday, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Escobar, said that this issue has not affected relations at all and underlined the excellent level of relations between our country and the USA. Just 4 months ago, we held a strategic dialogue with the USA, where we set milestones for the intensification of relations in every field, from defense and security, where Albania’s role is highly valued, to regional policies, where Albania is seen as the closest and most trustworthy partner of the USA in the region, to justice and governance, where the vital support of the USA will continue, to energy where Albania is seen as a country with extraordinary potential, to business and economic cooperation where a joint economic committee will be established, to diplomacy, where today we have an extremely successful cooperation in the Security Council, where actually the cooperation is going so well that for some files we are working as a single team, up to new fields such as cyber security,” she said.
Xhaçka said that this is the truth of relations with the USA under the stewardship of Edi Rama. “Meanwhile, the truth of Sali Berisha’s relations with the USA is that they have designated him.”
