Prime Minister Edi Rama on Thursday shared images of wheat fields in the south-western Albanian region of Myzeqe, known as the breadbasket of Albania’s agriculture, as wheat harvest is already underway.

The government head noted in a post on the social media that the cropland area has expanded significantly throughout the country.

“Myzeqe agricultural fields, where farmers are expanding the cropland area every year,” PM Rama said.

Agricultural sector is the largest contributor to Albania’s GDP.

Growth in agriculture exports and the government support schemes for agriculture have encouraged farmers to expand the cultivated area throughout the territory of the country.

Recent data from the National Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) show that Albania produced a total of 701 314 metric tons of crops this year, with the southern region of Fier accounting for the largest share of crop production with 176.584 tons, followed by Elbasan with 95.572 tons and Korça with 83.889 tons.
