TIRANA, Sept 4 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama, speaking at the “Touristic Albania 2030” event—which focused on setting the course for the future development of tourism while reflecting on lessons from the current season—addressed the issue of waste management.
Rama pointed out that although the government has taken steps to keep coastal areas clean, the waste problem continues to be serious cause for concern, primarily due to irresponsible behavior by citizens.
As far as the issue of waste is concerned, the ‘Clean Beaches’ campaign has delivered many positive outcomes. We’ve witnessed a significant transformation, largely due to the proactive, on-the-ground leadership of the Minister of Environment—Albania’s so-called ‘chief cleaner.’ However, even her efforts—or those of an entire army—would be in vain if people continue to litter while others are cleaning. And it’s not foreign tourists speaking English, French, Spanish, or Italian who are the problem; it’s Albanian-speaking tourists from Albania, Kosovo, and North Macedonia. These visitors, while admiring the country’s natural beauty and stopping at scenic viewpoints to take selfies and brag about Albania happen to throw trash from their vehicles. Ironically, the most scenic locations are becoming the most heavily polluted.
The Prime Minister also emphasized that municipalities are responsible for cleaning up the cities, adding that the government will commit to overseeing waste treatment at the national level.

“Waste management is a pressing issue. The government cannot clean up Vlora; that responsibility rests with the municipality. The government cannot carry out city cleaning, but it is committed to overseeing waste treatment across all cities and municipalities nationwide,” Rama stated.
