TIRANA, Nov 7 /ATA/ – Thousands of businesses across Albania have acted by increasing the salaries they declare to the tax authorities following a recent warning of penalties for incorrect salary declarations as part of the government campaign to crackdown on the underreported wages practice and informality in the country’s economy.

More than 9,000 companies have adjusted their payroll figures, aligning with formal reporting standards and avoiding potential fines after a message sent by the Tax Administration urging around 130 000 taxpayers to declare correct payrolls until October 20.

The government’s initiative targets informal salary practices that diminish workers’ pension contributions and weaken the fiscal framework

According to the Tax Administration, these adjustments have already brought in an additional 1.25 billion lek in declared wages.

In October alone, the Tax Administration reported a marked improvement in contribution collections, totaling 819 million lek, or 6% above projected figures.

This uptick illustrates a broader move towards compliance, benefitting employees by securing more reliable pension contributions.

A review of October payroll data revealed 37,331 businesses still considered high-risk for wage underreporting. Despite the initial warning, these companies have yet to respond, facing added scrutiny from tax officials.
