TIRANA, Oct 21 /ATA/ Prime Minister Edi Rama said those inciting violence during protests in Tirana did not represent students or citizens seeking change, stressing that those with legitimate grievances neither encouraged nor supported violence.

Rama voiced concern over the conduct of some university lecturers, accusing them of endorsing violent actions rather than publicly distancing themselves from them.

“Unfortunately, although their numbers are declining, some lecturers — a very small minority of the academic community — along with others involved, are giving visibility and support to these actions while failing to condemn the violence,” he said.

Rama said television coverage was further fuelling the situation by portraying violence inappropriately and depicting institutions as targets amid clashes with the police.

He emphasised that the recent unrest should not be equated with the turmoil of the past, particularly the 1997 crisis triggered by the collapse of fraudulent investment schemes.

“Today, things are completely different. We are facing a parallel world of people trying to impose their reality on us through stones, fire, threats, insults and pressure of every kind, within a limited area in central Tirana. It has turned into something resembling a horror film, with hooded and masked individuals confronting the State Police as officers continue to carry out their duties and stand their ground,” Rama said.

He stressed that beyond the area where clashes are taking place, citizens continue to face hardships, problems and unmet needs, while rightfully calling for better living conditions.

Rama called on all institutions, including the banking sector, to exercise patience and remain calm, describing banks as guarantors of Albanians’ savings and investments.

“All of this should serve as a broader perspective, reminding us of the need for great patience and maximum calm across all institutions, including this institution and the banking network, which safeguard and guarantee Albanians’ savings and investments,” Rama concluded.
