TIRANA, Sept 30 /ATA/ The chairman of the DP-Euroatlantic Democrats, Lulzim Basha, participated in the meeting of the parliamentary group of the European People’s Party, in the Council of Europe.

Basha wrote in a post on Facebook account that he brought up some important issues related to the the rule of law in Albania, as the cornerstone of democracy and the country’s development.

In the session with the Secretary of the Venice Commission, Basha emphasized the need to advance vetting in politics, which is held back by the majority.

Basha also spoke about the decision of the Constitutional Court on the mandate of MP Olta Xhaçka and the arrest of opposition MP Ervin Salianji.

“In this meeting, I had the opportunity to talk through some important issues on the state of the play of the rule of law in Albania, as the basis of democracy and the development of the country, the need to advance vetting in politics, held back by the majority but supported in principle by the Venice Commission; the constitutional crisis triggered by disregard for the decisions of the Constitutional Court regarding the mandate of the MP Xhaçka, as well as the arrest of the opposition deputy Ervin Salianji on the charge of false reporting, while the brother of the former minister Xhafaj turned out to have been convicted and the minister himself was subject of the anti-mafia law. All these are issues that need to come to the attention of the Venice Commission and CoE, that require strengthening joint efforts in tackling the challenges pertaining to the rule of law and functional democracy in Albania,” wrote Basha.
