The mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, in the ceremony held for the opening of this competition, said that the National Theater is today on the verge of the most significant victory, that of transformation into a modern theater.

“I’m really proud of all our design teams. I announce the opening of competition for the new theater in Tirana, where it was, but 3 times the size and several times more comfortable than it was. Today we are on the verge of the biggest victory, I believe, of all the battles that have been politicized and fought in the city of Tirana, that for the new theater. I am ready to bet that it will definitely be a place that will win awards and, without a doubt, the most beautiful theater in our region,” he said.
Our duty, said Veliaj, is to build a new theater, which will serve everyone, both the left and the right wing supporters.

“Who is serious and who does not use history to cause hysteria, must see the truth as it is. Our duty is not to please everyone. Our duty is to serve everyone. Our duty is to build a theater and make sure that people from the left, from the right, from the elderly, from children, from Tirana born citizens and new residents come over here to see plays and shows that hit the stage.

Veliaj also recalled how the old building looked like. “It makes no sense to be pathetic and feel nostalgia, because if they were like that, they wouldn’t allow the theater bingo roulette to spin where we are today,” said Veliaj.

The mayor stated that the construction of the new theater was delayed due to the crisis and soaring prices.
The best international companies are expected to participate in the competition opened by the municipality of Tirana.
