TIRANA, April 6 / ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama reacted Saturday after a statement issued by the Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj earlier on the day following the arrest of former directors of the Municipality of Tirana on corruption charges.

The government head reaffirmed iron political will to support the Special Anti-Corruption and Anti-Crime Prosecution Structure (SPAK) and to press ahead with the European Albania 2030 programme.

“I couldn’t agree more with what the Mayor Erion Veliaj told Tirana citizens today in his direct message regarding the arrest of several former municipal directors,” PM Rama said in a statement via the social media platform X.

Rama underlined that an old fashioned and communist-era mindset still prevailing in certain segments of politics and the media continues a smear and defamation campaign against individuals when it comes to justice issues.

“However, we can do nothing as long as the political slanders and denigration by the media have become part of our jungle-turned public life. This is the case today to loudly state again that our support for SPAK is not propaganda, but iron political will,” PM Rama stated.

“We are in office to deliver on the European Albania 2030 programme through reforms, huge efforts, absolute determination,” he said.

Earlier today, Mayor Erion Veliaj issued a statement addressing the unfolding events and expressing his perspective on the matter. He highlighted the stance of the Socialist Party and Prime Minister Rama, who advocate for allowing the justice system to handle legal issues independently and without external influence.

Veliaj urged the public to uphold democratic values and respect the rule of law, allowing judicial processes to unfold without interference and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting institutions like SPAK in combating corruption and serving the citizens of Tirana.
