One of the projects set to be completed soon is the Great Ring Road. The other project concerns the implementation of a bus rapid transit system, using battery-electric buses on three transport lines in Tirana (Unaza, Tirana e Re, Kombinat-Kinostudio).

“At this rate, within the next year, we should have finished most of the works on the main roads. Let’s say, yea we have a lot of work on secondary roads and neighborhood connections. Even there we will intervene in many systems, in about 50 neighborhoods, with total requalification works. Of course, a very large part of Tirana has been fixed, but there are still corners, given that Tirana continues to grow”, said Veliaj.

“We need to keep the pace of Tirana’s growth and go to the last alley. At the end of this year, we just signed a contract, most of it a soft loan, the other part a grant – the biggest grant in the history of the city from the EU and KFW – to totally modernize public transport. Our decision-making is that we will do what we did with the waste in Tirana”, said Mayor Veliaj.

“It is better to clean it ourselves, provide the service ourselves. Maybe, at the beginning, not in 100% of the territory, but at least for some main lines, to give the message that the public sector can manage as well as the private sector does, even better. This loan enables us to start with three express bus lines, first with Unaza, Kombinat-Kinostudio and New Tirana. With these 3 lines, we introduce for the first time the concept of public transport management. It also entails modernization of the bus stations, the electronic ticketing, the timing when the bus arrives, how close it is, and I believe that this will be a project that I want to finish within this term,” said Veliaj.

He also mentioned that major projects such as the New National Theatre, the Botanical Garden and the New Boulevard will be completed within the current term of office.
